Holy Week Devotionals
We invite you to join us here each day, April 11-16, for a daily devotional brought to you by various members of our staff. Our hope is that these short messages will prepare your heart to celebrate Easter Sunday like never before.
In Hebrew, the word repentance means “to take a deep breath and sigh.” A deep feeling of sorrow, of remorse, or to feel regret. Repentance at the root seems to have the idea that you have done something wrong, and you feel ashamed about it. And you feel it deeply; it gets deep down inside you, and you groan or sigh or you breathe deeply. We are all familiar with that part of repentance, knowing that it has to do with our feelings.
Interestingly, the writers of the Bible, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, substituted “return” or “turn around and go” in place of the original meaning of regret. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 we see the word that translates to “turn”. This is not a word of feeling at all, but a word of action.
Under the influence of the prophets, repentance became not something you felt but something you did. And it’s essential that we understand this foundational truth. You don’t repent by taking a deep breath and simply feeling better. You repent only when you turn around and go back toward God. It doesn’t matter how you feel, what’s essential is that you do something. The call to repentance is not a call to feel remorse for your sins but instead it is a call to turn around so that God can do something.
The Bible says, “Let us examine our ways, Let us turn back to the Lord. Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven and say, ‘We have sinned and rebelled’". (Lamentations 3:40-42)
A.W. Tozer once said, “you can pray till doomsday for revival, but you will never get it without repentance and confession of sin in the Christian life.” Without taking this necessary step of action, we will only go so far in our pursuit of all that God has for us. Frank Bartleman said, “the depth of our repentance will determine the depth of our revival.”
The truth is you cannot run ‘from’ God and ‘to’ God at the same time. You can’t seek His face when your back is turned to Him, so I encourage you to apply these three steps. First, take responsibility for your sin. Second, turn away from those things. And third, turn toward God and His grace.
Take that first step of repentance today.

What does it mean to you when you hear "seek the face of God?" This is a phrase we
often use in churches or in our Christian circles, but what does it actually mean? Let’s look at Exodus 33:18-23:
Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen."
At the time Moses makes this request of God the Israelites have just begun their journey in the wilderness and Moses has witnessed many amazing signs and wonders. They are about to embark on an even greater journey, and Moses not only asks that God go with them but also to show him His glory! After reading this I asked myself, “What did Moses experience on the mountain when he received the ten commandments? What prompted him to ask for more of God and nothing else?" He doesn't ask for different food or better living conditions; he doesn't ask for peace among the people in the camp; he doesn't even ask for restoration of relationships within the camp. He asks for the chance to see God's face.
I have been in settings in which the presence of God is so heavy it almost feels as though the air is thick. God has met me in my prayer time, in my worship time and sometimes just driving in my car. It's in those moments that I feel like there is an opening from heaven and anything I ask of God I will receive, but the only thing my mouth can utter is God I want more of you. I long to stay in those moments and feel the absolute freedom that can only be found in the presence of God. It's in these moments that God's glory is so real that it seems the very thing I thought I wanted to ask for just pales in comparison to being in His presence.
David writes in Psalm 27:4, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple."
Respond:
As we prepare our hearts for revival, I pray that each of us would ask of the Lord, just as David did, that we would be able to gaze on the beauty of His face and linger in His presence more than any other request we may come with. Spend time just contemplating the ancient revelation that is recorded in the Bible of how truly awesome our God is. Know that whatever the outcome of your situation, it is the will of God, and His goodness is enough to praise Him! Surrender to that truth and come with an expectant heart that God will meet you right where you are and His presence will overwhelm you.
Have you ever wondered what defines the power of prayer? According to the Bible, the power of prayer is, quite simply, the power of God, who hears and answers prayers.
If you come to church for worship what are your expectations? Is it good music, cool aesthetics, and colorful lights? Or how about a great communicator? Here’s what I know: having great music and a great communicator means nothing if we don’t also encounter God.
After the completion of God’s temple, Solomon’s faithful prayer was answered in a unique way. According to the Bible, God’s presence fell down like fire and filled the temple. This encounter left God’s people in awe and their only response was to fall on their face and worship Him (2 Chronicles 7:1-3).
This is what I want for each of you, a true encounter that is directly linked to prayer. Solomon and the people of Israel experienced God in this way because of the faithful prayers from Solomon. Can I tell you that God wants to meet with you also? Because our prayers are the doorway to a divine encounter with God. We have to pray until something happens, believing in the power of prayer and the God who answers.
I am the proud father of three children between the ages of 16 and two-years-old. In our home, someone is always eating or inevitably, complaining that the house does not having any food. Our eldest children are most vocal in our lack of food, so much so, when you hear their complaints “there’s nothing to eat in this house!” or “why don’t we ever have any food?” you would expect to see barren shelves and empty containers in our pantry.
However, when my two-year-old opens the same pantry, he gasps with excitement because he sees the endless potential in front of him. A truly opposite reaction from my eldest children who only see a pantry in lack. This is the same pantry with much different perspectives, one sees a shortage while the other sees the fullness of a parent’s love and provision.
Just as my children have different views of our home’s food supply, we can also miss the blessing of God’s love for us. Today, I want to encourage you to move the things out of your line of sight that could be hiding the goodness that God has to offer, a love that never lacks supply.
Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:2
We do not have to endure the emptiness of life but instead we can access God’s lavish love and endless promises that He is our healer, redeemer, and our provider. He is full of grace and full of mercy, He is slow to anger, He is steadfast, and He is always faithful. So cherished children of a loving God, our response is to acknowledge His great love and keep our eyes on Jesus, remember that God is a good father, with a pantry stocked full of everything we need and so much more.
God promises that if we call on Him, He will hear us. Isn’t that good news? But there is a huge prerequisite. We must first BE HUMBLE. This is more easily said than done. It’s easy to make life all about us. It’s easy to think we have it all figured out. It’s easy to get in the “driver’s seat” of life and take the wheel. It’s easy to live a self-centered life. Being humble?...Not so much. This takes work. This goes against everything that culture says and what our flesh desires. This has to be an intentional decision based on knowing that life is not about me and that I don’t always know what’s best. It’s a vulnerable place to be, I know. But in order for God to hear us this is where we must be.
You know, God could choose to humble us. For some of us, like me, He has in the past. And that does not feel so good. But He does it out of love because He wants the best for us. So the easier route to get there is by taking the road of humility. Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. He had all power in His hands, but he was tender with the human heart. He had the best words but oftentimes He would simply sit and listen. He could have called thousands of angels from Heaven, but He still chose to endure the cross. Why? Because of humility. Remember the night before He died, when He prayed in the garden? He did not necessarily want to go through with the cross. But as he prayed, he said, “Nevertheless, not my will, but Father yours be done.” Humility in action.
We must CHOOSE to be humble. No parent enjoys teaching their kids a hard lesson. They want them to get to the best decision on their own. In the same way, that is what God wants for us. This scripture proves that humility unlocks the ear of God and causes Him to move on our behalf. Not status. Not accomplishments. Not a big accumulation of stuff. Humility.
So how do we walk in humility? Simple. It’s a daily decision to submit to God in every area of our lives. By doing this we get the ear of God and his ability to move on our behalf. Let’s choose to walk in humility today.
Reflect:
Ask yourself these few questions today: What areas of my life have I not submitted to God? What areas of my life do I have “figured out”? Where have I not admitted that I need help?
Prayer:
“God, help me to walk in humility today. Help me remember that I don’t know it all and that I don’t have it all figured out. That’s ok because I know who does and that’s you. Because of this I can trust you with every area of my life to give me direction, clarity, peace, and so much more. I fully trust you with my life and I humble myself before you. In Jesus name, Amen.”
